Natural Supplements

Trying to improve your health has become a sort of national pastime in the modern world.  We seem to be constantly looking for things to give us an edge on our lives and on our vitality.  It’s no wonder that nutritional supplements are a popular commodity.  With their listed benefits and wide range of potential uses, these supplements seem to be an easy way to turn back the hands of time and turn up our energy levels.  But as with any new health product comes a responsibility to make sure it’s safe and realistic for you to take.

The biggest concern with nutritional supplements is that they aren’t regulated by the Federal Drug Administration.  This means, anyone can put anything into their medications and it is not tested or measured for efficacy or for safety.  While businesses aren’t necessarily trying to put products on the shelves that are harmless, since you can’t be certain the product contains what the label says it contains, one should choose supplements at their own risk.  It’s generally best to stick with supplements from well-known companies, ones that truly do their own independent testing of quality.

The key to choosing the best nutritional supplements for yourself is to think about what you need and what your diet may already be providing.  Most people will take in a fair amount of vitamins and minerals in a well-balanced diet.  Of course, if you’re not eating healthfully, you’re probably lacking in these essential nutrients.  To combat this, a basic multi-vitamin and mineral supplement can be helpful on a daily basis.  However, even though a supplement can help, it doesn’t take the place of a healthy diet.  It can only fill in the gaps until your body begins to be damaged by the lack of nutrition.

The next thing to do when considering nutritional supplements is to talk to your doctor.  This is especially true when you want to take herbal supplements.  If you are already on prescription medications, many of these over the counter supplements can interact with other chemicals, causing harmful effects or perhaps reducing the effectiveness of a necessary medication you take.  For example, St. John’s Wort is promoted for the relief of depression, but it also counteracts the hormones in birth control pills, rendering them less effective.  Talking to your doctor and to the pharmacist will help you avoid a potentially dangerous interaction.

Finally, health supplements need to be purchased with a fair amount of realism.  While vitamins and minerals are often purported to be energy-boosting, they don’t contain calories, which are the actual source of energy.  You need to look at vitamins, minerals, and other supplements as simply a way to help boost your body, but you might not feel 200% different when you take them.  If you’re buying health supplements based on false expectations, you might end up buying more than you need and more than your body can handle.

Supplements do have their place in our quest for health.  By realizing that the fountain of youth isn’t sold in a bottle, we can make practical choices about our health.  A good supplement regimen of a multi-vitamin and mineral, calcium and magnesium, as well as vitamin C is generally safe for most people.  And while it might not make you 20 years old again, it can certainly help to ensure you’re doing all you can for your health.
